Copper is the New Gold

With the costs of gold rising to an all time high during 2008, topping out at over $1,000 per troy ounce, and the economy on a downward spiral, jewelry and accessories will be taking a colorful, and more economical, turn in 2009. Copper, bronze, and other colorful metals are becoming increasingly popular and will now take a more prominent role in the jewelry and accessory designs of the coming seasons.

Designer Andrea Acailawen sees this new trend as an exciting design opportunity. “Jewelry, as well as some accessories, are becoming much more colorful as a result. With copper and bronze you have a variety of patinas, oxidation processes, as well as metal forming and texturing techniques to work with, not to mention the incorporation of enamels.  The tonal contrasts of bronze or copper next to fine and sterling silver is also quite stunning. The result of this latest trend is a brilliant spectrum of colors and design possibilities, while also getting back to basics. ”
